Thumb Arthritis: Coping with Basal Joint Pain

Posted by Dennis R. Escalera on 2nd Dec 2024

Thumb arthritis, also known as basal joint arthritis, is a common form of osteoarthritis that affects the joint at the base of the thumb. This condition can make simple tasks, such as turning a doorknob or opening a jar, painful and challenging.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Pain at the base of the thumb, particularly during gripping or pinching motions.
  • Swelling, stiffness, and tenderness in the affected area.
  • Reduced range of motion and grip strength.

Risk Factors

  • Age: Thumb arthritis is more common in older adults.
  • Gender: Women are more likely than men to develop this condition.
  • Joint injuries or repetitive strain: Previous injuries or repeated stress on the thumb joint can increase the risk.

Treatment Approaches

  • Splints: To support the thumb and limit movement, reducing pain.
  • Topical Creams: Plant-based pain relief creams can provide localized relief.
  • Physical Therapy: Strengthening exercises to improve hand function and reduce discomfort.
  • Medications: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce pain and swelling.
  • Surgical Options: In severe cases, procedures like joint fusion or joint replacement may be considered.
