Things You May Not Know About Arnica

If you are looking for an alternative way to get relief from your pain, you need to know about Arnica. Arnica Montana is a yellow mountain daisy straight from nature’s pharmacy. In other words, it has been used as an herbal medicine for centuries to combat various types of pain. It is also a homeopathic active ingredient and used in topical lotions that help with bruising, stiffness, pain, swelling, and muscle injuries.

How Can Arnica Benefit You?

Swelling is our body’s natural response to injury and believe it or not, one of the first signs of healing. This is due to your blood pooling at the sight of the damage and beginning to repair itself. This is often where someone would choose to take some kind of over-the-counter painkiller like ibuprofen, for example. While these pills were formulated to reduce the swelling and to alleviate some of the pain associated with it, they do leave out a huge component the healing process: treating the underlying cause of the pain. This is where Arnica Montana differs. Arnica has been found to help increase circulation and white blood cell activity at the site. Therefore, the main goal of stimulating the body’s healing process is fulfilled by Arnica versus just temporarily masking the pain and getting the puffiness down.

Arnica is also a safe alternative to try for pain. The same over-the-counter painkillers are often used to manage pain. These drugs are known as NSAIDs, or non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Where they show benefits, as stated above, in relieving inflammation, they do not quite stack up to the capabilities of Arnica. One important factor that must be considered when comparing the two is safety. While over-the- counter painkillers have become many people’s “go-to” as far as pain relief, the health risks associated with them, especially when overused, are not always recognized. Some include gastrointestinal damage, high blood pressure, kidney damage and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. In fact, each year over 100,000 people are hospitalized due to the side effects of NSAIDs. By contrast, there are no known side effects of homeopathic Arnica beside the possibility of an allergic reaction, which is cured simply by halting the use of the product.

There are different ways, all equally convenient, to experience the benefits of Arnica Montana to combat pain:

  • Topically: Arnica creams, gels, salves, balms, and ointments are all fairly accessible to the public. Like anything else, the major differences of these products are the ingredients (active and inactive), the potency, and the manufacturer. Topical forms of Arnica are most commonly used for bruising, body aches, muscle soreness, joint pain and various minor pain in areas that can be reached easily for application. With all these options available, there is no one form of homeopathic Arnica that works best for everyone. A lot of it comes down to preference, sampling, and your specific needs. You can also find topical pain relief products that combine Arnica with other amazing ingredients to produce a comprehensive blend.
  • Orally: Arnica supplements come in the form of tablets, pills, capsules, or liquids and are best used for minor pain where OTC painkillers would have been the alternative option. For example, headaches, mouth pain, leg cramping, arthritic pain, back pain and other various minor pain in hard to reach areas are all suitably treated with the oral form of homeopathic Arnica.*

*Important Note: Herbal preparations of Arnica are vastly different from it’s homeopathic counterpart. This blog is providing information and speaking on behalf of the homeopathic medicine and not the plant in herbal form. Due to noted side effects, professional practitioners only recommend homeopathic Arnica.
