A bruise is caused when the tiny blood vessels under your skin are damaged or broken as a result of trauma. This trauma can be anything from walking into the coffee table, running into a wall or hitting yourself with a hammer. In fact, you can probably come up with a long list of the ways you have bruised yourself, and list bruises that appeared without your knowledge of even hitting anything.

The raised area of the bruise results from blood leaking from these injured blood vessels into the tissues. These bruises are referred to as a contusion. A bruise that is purplish and flat is referred to as an ecchymosis and occurs when blood leaks from the blood vessels and into the top layers of the skin.
